There are many however, the most frequently used are the Masthead Amplifiers.

The purpose of the Masthead Amplifer is if the signal at the antenna is not strong enough at the TV outlet. Remember it's no point amplifing a signal if after calculating that the amplifier even after you install it will not translate to the correct amont of signal at the TV outlet.

We are now in the digital age and installing a Masthead amplifier at the antenna may have slightly improved the signal for analogue but won't for digital especially if we are talking about high MER readings.

In times gone by the normal installer would put up a small antenna and boost the signal with the amp by say 38 dB and if it was to much they would simply turn down the amplifer solving the problem however, with digital this would distroy the signal in quality which = LOW MER READINGS! and it could also push the signal reading outside the parameters of the receiver.

When even thinking about installing an amp along with an antenna a site inspection should be carried out. A higher quality antenna with no amp is much better than a poor quality antenna and boosting amp..

 

Once you install the best quality antenna you'll see the best signal you get and then work if you require an amp after working out any losses to the final TV outlet. The maximum gain by using a Masthead amplifier should not be more than 10 dB greater than the system losses.

LNDA (Low Noise Digital Amplifier):-

Any amplifer should be placed as close as possible (est 1m) from the antenna balum amplifing a good signal quality rather than amplifing poor signal and distortions further down the track of the cable route.

This is a very basic amp not having any gain controls and having an average of 20 dB gain.

This should only be used if the correct antenna is installed and you have not a signal greater than 55 dB at the TV outlet.

 

Q - Amp:-

 

This type of amp (left) was specially designed to provide versatile applications of TV signals. On the dash board you'll find many features to fine tune a system to a wide range of conditions. It can provide a wide range of gain ranges by use of the controls ending with a nearly true signal result or should I say the best possible signal obtain for the circumstances.

Distribution Amplifier:-

This amp is to provide sufficient gain across a distribution system. Remember you only need to amplify enough to cancel out the losses and no more otherwise you will encounter distortion and degradation of the signal quality. Before you connect this amp up check out the manufacturers information because you may screw up the internal settings resulting in distortion. Some Distribution Amplifiers even have built in splitters.
